This trip is focused in one of the best known routes in Perú starting in Tarapoto city and ending in the department of Amazonas, the lodges we will visit are located at different elevations, this helps to have a large number of birds and of course several endemic birds.

After a 50-minute flight from Lima to Tarapoto, we will arrive in this vibrant city located at the foothills of the Andes (350 m / 1,148 ft). Upon arrival, we will visit two excellent hummingbird photography sites where we can expect to find species such as Gould’s Jewelfront, White-bearded Hermit, Pale-tailed Barbthroat, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Golden-tailed Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin, Koepcke’s Hermit, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Long-billed Starthroat, Amethyst Woodstar, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Blue-tailed Emerald, and Sparkling Violetear. Black-bellied Thorntail is also possible during certain seasons.

Before departing for Waqanki Lodge, we will spend part of the morning at the hummingbird feeders, taking advantage of different light conditions and additional photographic opportunities.
Afterward, we will drive approximately three hours to Waqanki Lodge, one of the most famous bird photography destinations in northern Peru.

Waqanki Lodge is located at approximately 860 m (2,820 ft) and offers excellent opportunities for hummingbird photography. One of the main targets here is the spectacular Rufous-crested Coquette.
Other species regularly visiting the feeders include White-necked Jacobin, Brown Violetear, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Black-throated Hermit, Great-billed Hermit, Black-throated Mango, Long-billed Starthroat, Blue-tailed Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, White-chinned Sapphire, Amethyst Woodstar, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, and Black-eared Fairy.
During the day we will also explore areas around Moyobamba for additional bird photography opportunities.

Today we travel to Arena Blanca Lodge, located in the foothills of the Alto Mayo Valley.
The lodge attracts an excellent variety of hummingbirds including Wire-crested Thorntail, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, and Violet-headed Hummingbird. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire may also be present depending on the season.
The lodge also maintains a hide for Rufous-breasted Wood Quail, Little Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, and Orange-billed Sparrow. Additional hides are currently being developed for Black-bellied Tanager and other foothill specialties.

After an early breakfast, we will visit Aguas Verdes, located approximately one hour from Arena Blanca Lodge. This area, also known as the Arena Blanca Reserve, offers excellent hummingbird photography opportunities. Species regularly found here include Wire-crested Thorntail, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Reddish Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird, and Green Hermit. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire are possible during certain seasons.
After our visit, we will continue ascending through the Alto Mayo Valley. Along the route we will make several stops at different elevations, providing excellent opportunities to photograph hummingbirds and other cloud forest species before arriving at Owlet Lodge.

Day 6, Owlet Lodge full day.
Owlet Lodge is one of the premier hummingbird photography destinations in northern Peru. Several feeding stations around the lodge provide excellent photographic opportunities throughout the day, particularly those located near the dining room.
At this elevation, in the upper cloud forest, we may encounter species such as Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Bronzy Inca, Collared Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Brown Violetear, and Long-tailed Sylph.

Day 7, Owlet Lodge full day activities
Today we will visit the nearby Alto Nieva Reserve, one of the best locations for photographing high-elevation hummingbirds and cloud forest specialties.
Target species include Royal Sunangel, Greenish Puffleg, Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Long-tailed Sylph, Bronzy Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Peruvian Racket-tail, Rufous-vented Whitetip, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, and Many-spotted Hummingbird.
Later we will visit Llantería, another excellent hummingbird location. Here we will search for Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Sabrewing (seasonal), Green Hermit, Gray-chinned Hermit, White-tipped Sicklebill, and Violet-fronted Brilliant.

Royal Sunangel
Today we travel to the Huembo Interpretation Center, one of the few locations where the spectacular endemic Marvelous Spatuletail can be photographed reliably.
The reserve offers excellent photographic opportunities and serves as one of Peru’s most important hummingbird conservation projects.

Our main target today is the extraordinary Marvelous Spatuletail, one of the world’s most remarkable hummingbirds. However, several additional species regularly visit the feeders and surrounding habitats.
Possible species include Sparkling Violetear, Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Bronzy Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Hummingbird, Little Woodstar, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Purple-throated Sunangel, Andean Emerald, Rufous-capped Thornbill, White-bellied Woodstar, and Brown Violetear.

After breakfast, we will transfer to Jaén Airport for our flight back to Lima. Depending on schedules and available time, we may make a few final birding stops before concluding the tour.
