Overview

 

This trip is focused in one of the best known routes in Perú starting in Tarapoto city and ending in the department of Amazonas,  the lodges we will  visit are located at different elevations, this helps to have a large number of birds and of course several endemic birds.

Itinerary

 

 

Day 1 

Lima – Tarapoto

After a flight from the coast to the north for about 50 minutes, you will arrive at the city of Tarapoto located at the foot of the mountain (1148 feet), then we will visit 2 places to observe and photograph hummingbirds, we will find species such as,

Gould’s Jewelfront,white bearded hermit,pale tailed barbthroat,Gray-breasted Sabrewing,fork tailed woodnymph,golden tailed sapphire, White-necked Jacobin,Koepcke’s Hermit,Blue-fronted Lancebill,Black belliedThorntail (not specific seasons), Sparkling Violetear,Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Long-billed Starthroat,Amethyst Woodstar, Many-spotted Hummingbird,blue tailed emerald.

 

Over night in Tarapoto.

Day 2

Tarapoto – Waqanki lodge

Before going to the next lodge we will spend part of the morning in these picalore observatories, perhaps with different light, and after 3 hours by car we will arrive at Wakanki Lodge.

Day 3 

Waqanki Lodge full day

This is a well-known lodge on the northern route (2821.52 feet), there are many species of birds and a good number of hummingbirds, including the   Rufous-crested Coquette and other species such as,White-necked Jacobin,Brown Violetear,Gray-breasted Sabrewing,Many-spotted Hummingbird,Golden-tailed Sapphire,Sapphire-spangled Emerald,black throated hermit.Great-billed Hermit,Black-throated Mango,Long-billed Starthroat,Blue-tailed Emerald,Violet-headed Hummingbird,

Fork-tailed Woodnymph,White-chinned Sapphire,black throated hermit,amethyst woodstar, Buff-tailed Sicklebill,black eared fairy,fork tailed woodnymph.

Moyobamba town

Day 4

Wakanky – Arena Blanca lodge

 

This is a new lodge located at the foothills, some species here are wire crested thorntail, blue fronted lancebill, sometimes black throated brilliant, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, brown violeteared, blue tailed emerald, rufous crested coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, rufous throated sapphire(not specific seasons), green fronted lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Violet-headed Hummingbird.

They also have an observatory for rufous breasted woodquial, little and cinereous tinamou, orange billed sparrow.

He is working on an observatory for other birds such as the black bellied tanager and other species.

Day 5 

Arena Blanca Lodge to Owlet Lodge

 

We will leave to the lodge early heading to Aquas Verdes (1 hour driving) , This place, also known as the Arena Blanca Reserve, has several birds and of course hummingbirds such as Wire-crested Thorntail,Gray-breasted Sabrewing,Golden-tailed Sapphire,Sapphire-spangled Emerald,brown violeteared,blue tailed emerald,rufous crested coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph,black throated brilliant(not specific seasons),rufous throated sapphire(not specific seasons)blue fronted lancebill,green fronted lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Reddish Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird,green hermit,

 

After we will ascending the Alto Mayo valley, in our journeys we will stop at different elevations for photo opportunities, this is in our way to Owlet Lodge.

Day 6,  Owlet Lodge full day.

 

This lodge has several points where hummingbirds are very active, one of the favorites is in front of the dining room where you can work to get good images, here the elevation is different, it is the upper part of the cloud forest and we have species like,Lesser Violetear,Speckled Hummingbird,Emerald-bellied Puffleg,Bronzy Inca

Collared Inca,Chestnut-breasted Coronet,Fawn-breasted Brilliant,White-bellied Woodstar,sword billed hummingbird, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Violet-fronted Brilliant,brown violetear,long tailed sylph,

Day 7,  Owlet Lodge full day activities

 

Today we will visit the Alto Nieva Reserve very close to the lodge where we will photograph species such as,Royal sunalgel,grennish puffleg

Lesser Violetear,Speckled Hummingbird,Long-tailed Sylph,Greenish Puffleg

Bronzy Inca,Chestnut-breasted Coronet,Peruvian Racket-tail,Rufous-vented Whitetip,Fawn-breasted Brilliant,Violet-fronted Brilliant,White-bellied Woodstar,many spotted hummingbird.

 

Then we can visit another place not far away called Llanteria where it has similar species but we can find an interesting species the Ecuadorian piedtail also Napo sabrewing (not specific season),green hermit,gray chinned hermit,white tipped scycklebill,violet fronted brilliant.

Day 8

Owlet Lodge to Huembo Lodge

Today we are going to go to one of the few places where we are going to photograph this endemic hummingbird the Marvelous Spatuletail at the Huembo Interpretation Center.

  Huembo Full day

 

The main hummingbird is undoubtedly the Marvelous spatuletail but there are also other species that will keep us busy during the day and these species are also interesting,Sparkling Violetear,Lesser Violetear,Speckled Hummingbird

Bronzy Inca,Chestnut-breasted Coronet,Violet-fronted Brilliant,White-bellied Hummingbird,little woodstar,black tailed trainbeared,purple throated sunangel,Andean emerald,rufous capped thornbill,white bellied woodstar,brown violetear.

Day 10

Huembo Town to Jaen town and Lima

Today after breakfast we will return to the city of Jaen or Tarapoto to return to Lima after obtaining good images during the trip.
