Overview

This exceptional bird photography expedition combines some of the finest wildlife destinations in Peru, taking participants through an extraordinary variety of ecosystems from the Pacific Coast to the Amazon Rainforest, the cloud forests of Northern Peru, the Andes, and finally the legendary Inca citadel of Machupicchu.

Designed specifically for photographers, this itinerary maximizes opportunities for close-range photography at hummingbird feeders, fruiting stations, clay licks, canopy towers, and natural habitats. Throughout the journey, we visit carefully selected locations that offer excellent photographic conditions and access to many of Peru’s most iconic and sought-after bird species.

The tour begins on the Pacific Coast near Lima, where we photograph marine birds including the spectacular Inca Tern. We then fly north to the foothills and cloud forests of San Martín and Amazonas, home to some of Peru’s most remarkable endemic species. Highlights include the magnificent Marvelous Spatuletail, Royal Sunangel, Wire-crested Thorntail, Rufous-crested Coquette, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Long-tailed Sylph, and many other hummingbirds.

Continuing to the southeastern Amazon, we visit Tambopata, one of the world’s premier wildlife destinations. Here we photograph colorful macaws, parrots, toucans, and other rainforest species at the famous Chuncho Clay Lick, one of the largest macaw congregations in South America.

The final stage of the journey takes us to the Sacred Valley and Machupicchu, where spectacular Andean scenery provides the backdrop for photographing Giant Hummingbird, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Bearded Mountaineer, Torrent Duck, and numerous high-Andean specialties. The tour concludes with a guided visit to Machupicchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

By combining the coast, northern cloud forests, Amazon rainforest, Andes, and Machupicchu into a single itinerary, this tour offers an unparalleled opportunity to photograph Peru’s incredible bird diversity while experiencing some of the country’s most iconic landscapes and cultural treasures.
