Here this tour will take you to the best places to photograph in the southern part of Peru

Itinerary

DAY 1.

LIMA- CUSCO CITY- SACRED VALLEY- OLLANTAYTAMBO TOWN

Upon arrival at Cusco Airport, we will transfer to the Sacred Valley, a journey of approximately two hours. Our hotel is located in Ollantaytambo and offers excellent opportunities to photograph the endemic Bearded Mountaineer directly in the gardens.

The hotel is also conveniently located near Ensifera Camp, also known as the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds, one of the best hummingbird photography locations in the Cusco region.

DAY 2 

SANTUARY OF HUMMINGBIRDS FULL DAY

Today we will spend the entire day at the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds, located approximately 35 minutes from the hotel.

Species regularly seen include Giant Hummingbird, Green-and-white Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Tyrian Metaltail, Sparkling Violetear, Shining Sunbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird, White-tufted Sunbeam (seasonal), White-bellied Woodstar, and several additional hummingbird species.

The sanctuary features beautiful gardens and natural perches, providing excellent photographic opportunities throughout the day.

DAY 3.

OLLANTAYTAMBO- WAYQUECHA BIOLOGICAL STATION

After breakfast, we will have another opportunity to photograph birds in the hotel gardens or revisit the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds before departing for Wayquecha Biological Station.

The drive takes us through the town of Paucartambo and into the famous Manu Road. Upon arrival at Wayquecha, we will photograph hummingbirds visiting the feeders, including Gould’s Inca, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Tyrian Metaltail, Shining Sunbeam, Violet-throated Starfrontlet, and Long-tailed Sylph.

Additional feeders attract species such as Hooded Mountain Tanager, Black-faced Brushfinch, and Blue-capped Tanager.

A small bathing area near the station attracts many colorful species, including Golden-collared Tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Moustached Flowerpiercer, Masked Flowerpiercer, Blue-capped Tanager, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, and Rust-and-yellow Tanager.

DAY 4.

WAYQUECHA TO COCK OF THE ROC LODGE

After breakfast we descend toward Cock of the Rock Lodge. Along the way we will visit one of the newest feeder locations on the Manu Road.

Species regularly visiting the feeders include Versicolored Barbet, Spotted Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Yellow-bellied Tanager, Golden-naped Tanager, Blue-gray Tanager, Silver-beaked Tanager, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Palm Tanager, and many others.

Later in the day we will visit an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek, where we hope to photograph the spectacular southern Peruvian subspecies.

DAY 5

COCK OF THE ROCK LOGDE FULL DAY

Today we will spend the day photographing birds at the lodge feeders and gardens.

Possible species include Golden-eared Tanager, numerous cloud forest hummingbirds, and several colorful tanagers. During the afternoon we may revisit the nearby feeder station where tanager activity is often exceptional.

Day 6

COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE FULL DAY

A second full day allows additional opportunities to photograph hummingbirds, tanagers, and other cloud forest species around the lodge.

We can also revisit the nearby feeder station for more photographic opportunities and different lighting conditions.

DAY 7

COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE – MANU BIOLODGE( VILLA CARMEN BIOLOGICAL STATION)

After breakfast we continue descending to Villa Carmen Biological Station, located at the foothills of the Andes.

The feeders here attract species such as Blue-throated Piping-Guan, Spix’s Guan, Purplish Jay, Violaceous Jay, Red-capped Cardinal, and Russet-backed Oropendola. Hoatzins are also frequently encountered and can often be photographed at close range.

The hummingbird feeders provide opportunities to photograph several lowland and foothill species.

DAY 8 

MANU BIOLODGE FULL DAY.

Today we will visit Pico de Hoz, located approximately 20 minutes from the lodge.

Specialized feeding stations offer opportunities to photograph Amazonian Antpitta, Rufous-sided Crake, Black-capped Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, Little Tinamou, and Pectoral Sparrow.

Hummingbird species include White-browed Hermit, White-bearded Hermit, Pale-tailed Barbthroat, and several additional foothill species.

DAY 9.

MANU BIOLOGDE FULL DAY.

Today we explore another productive foothill location where mixed flocks are common.

Species may include Yellow-bellied Tanager, Blue-necked Tanager, Silver-beaked Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Blue Dacnis, Purple Honeycreeper, Green Honeycreeper, Lemon-throated Barbet, and several hummingbirds.

Notable hummingbird species include Buff-tailed Sicklebill, Rufous-crested Coquette, Blue-fronted Lancebill, and Koepcke’s Hermit.

DAY 10

MANU BIOLODGE – CUSCO

Today we return to Cusco, stopping at selected birding and photography locations visited earlier in the tour. This provides one final opportunity to improve photographs or target species that may have been missed.
