Day 1

Flight Lima to Puerto Maldonado – Tambapata Clay Lick

We will pick up at Puerto Maldonado airport after your flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado(rainforest)city and we will be driving the Interoceanica highway for about 48 km, then enter to a dirt road by middle of the forest for approximately 18 km to the bank of the Tambopata River. The lodge is located near the main Check Point Malinowski of the Tambopata National Reserve.

The driving is 1,3 hours then we take a boat for 15 minutes to the lodge.

You will arrive at the Tambopata Inn Lodge for the afternoon.

Day 2

Macaw Clay lick Chuncho – then Boat trip to Los Amigos Biological Station.

We wake up very  early, at 4:30, to leave at 5:00 a.m. our destination, the world’s largest Macaw clay lick, a trip of approximately 35 minutes boat trip, on the way we will have the incredible opportunity to see Capybaras, which are the largest rodents in the world, tapirs,  and you can even see the South American feline, the Jaguar, many of our customers (35%) have seen this beautiful cat  and they have photographic evidence of these encounters with these  mammals.

Once arrived to the Macaw clay lick we will have a chance to see hundreds of parrots of different species who come to eat clay on the wall adjacent to the River. We will accommodate us in our chairs to wait to begin one of the most beautiful natural shows of the birds in the world. Species of large macaws the most colorful of America, Red and Green, Blue and Yellow and the Scarlet’s Macaws gather to eat clay needed in their daily diet to eliminate toxins. Parrots such as the Blue headed, Orange cheeked Parrot, White-eyed, Dusky-headed Parakeet, among others come every day to same place for  the same purpose.

After this morning activity we will return to the lodge and leave to Laberinto mining town 30 minutes driving to take a boat upstream the Madre de Dios River for 3.5 hours along the river we pass and see local communities of miners and Indigenous before to we arrive to the Station, we will have lunch on the boat as we travel by boat.

So, we will explore the trails in the afternoon at the various trails nearby the Station to look for monkeys.

There are 11 species of Monkeys record here .

Los Amigos Biological Station full day activities

We will explore the trail to Los Amigos River hiking to a Mirador then we will make a long loop back to the Station over the Terra Firme and Flood Plain Forest.

In the afternoon we have the chance to explore Poza Don Pedro (seasonal flooded Palm Forest and small oxbow lake) this is place has seen the 5 mts Anaconda inhabitant of this wetland.

This morning to explore the trails around the Terra Firme Forest and viewing points over the Madre de Dios River so we have the chance to find the 11 species of Monkeys and many more species of birds around the trails.

Day 5

Los Amigos full activities

Early in the morning we hike in the floodplain forest to visit the Cocha lobo Oxbow Lake for the Giant River Otter and Black Caimans inhabitants of the Oxbow Lake.

The afternoon we explore trails and night time hike to look for amphibians and reptiles.

Day 06

Los Amigos station to Puerto Maldonado airport

We leave the Station after breakfast toward Laberinto by boat (3 hours downstream) then we drive (40 minutes by car) Puerto Maldonado city toward airport to flight Puerto Maldonado to Lima in the afternoon.

DAY 1

Lima city tour (Main Plaza, Catedral, Church of San Francisco Catacombs and the Gold Museum.

Transfer to Callao port for the Palomino Island tour

This is a morning tour around the Palomino Island for 2,30 hours with a group so we can see the Humboldt Pingui, Peruvian Booby, Red-legged Cormorant and the See Lions, this is part of the wildlife along the Coast so we have the chance to swing with the See Lion.

In the afternoon flight to Cusco city then we transfer you to the Urubamba town a lower elevation than Cusco city.

In Cusco we drive to the Sacred Valley over the mountains, we stop for landscape views.

We take the train to Machupicchu in the morning (1:30 hours) then we get to the hotel so lunch in town Aguas Calientes, so after we will be on the bus at the Inca ruins.

Machupicchu Inca citadel second visit day in the morning or explore the Mariposario down at aguas calientes.

Explore the town so City tour and the nearby inca ruins like Sacsayhuman, Qenqo, Pucapucara, Tambomachay.

Flight Cusco to Puerto Maldonado town

We will arrive around time for Lunch to the city of Puerto Maldonado so in the afternoon we will visit the old Oxbow Lake Yacumama near the town by car.

In the lake we take a small canoe so we have the chances to find many species of Birds like Red-belied Macaws and herons and the Black Caimans. This

Early in the morning we will take a boat to the Cachuela Clay Lick (many parrot species gather together and small Macaws every morning) after we will return to the hotel for breakfast

Then we drive to La Filadelfia river port to Tambopata Inn Lodge for the Macaw Clay Lick.

In the afternoon we will explore trails and night time activities.

So, we continue we will be at Puerto Maldonado town and Tambopata river in our journey Sandoval lake.

Early in the morning we cross the lake and hike to the main river Madre de Dios in our way to Puerto Maldonado city

Upon arrival in Tarapoto, we will transfer directly to Waqanki Lodge. Depending on our arrival time, we will spend part of the afternoon photographing hummingbirds and other birds around the lodge gardens.

Day 2 

Waqanki Lodge full day

Waqanki Lodge is one of the best-known bird photography locations in northern Peru, situated at approximately 860 m (2,820 ft). The gardens attract an impressive diversity of hummingbirds, including the highly sought-after Rufous-crested Coquette.

Other species regularly photographed here include White-necked Jacobin, Brown Violetear, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Black-throated Hermit, Great-billed Hermit, Black-throated Mango, Long-billed Starthroat, Blue-tailed Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, White-chinned Sapphire, Amethyst Woodstar, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, and Black-eared Fairy.

During the day we will also explore nearby areas around Moyobamba for additional bird photography opportunities.

Day 3

Wakanky – Arena Blanca lodge

After breakfast we will travel to Arena Blanca Lodge, located in the foothills of the Alto Mayo Valley.

The feeders attract species such as Wire-crested Thorntail, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, and Violet-headed Hummingbird. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire are possible during certain seasons.

The lodge also features a hide for Rufous-breasted Wood Quail, Cinereous Tinamou, Little Tinamou, and Orange-billed Sparrow. Additional hides are being developed for species such as Black-bellied Tanager and other foothill specialties.

Day 4

We will spend the morning photographing birds around the lodge gardens and feeders before visiting Llantería, where specialties such as Ecuadorian Piedtail and, occasionally, Napo Sabrewing may be found.

Later we will visit the Alto Nieva Reserve, an excellent cloud forest site where we will search for Greenish Puffleg, Royal Sunangel, and several additional hummingbird species.

Day 5 .

After an early breakfast, we will visit Aguas Verdes (approximately one hour from the lodge). This area, also known as the Arena Blanca Reserve, offers excellent hummingbird photography opportunities. Species regularly seen include Wire-crested Thorntail, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Reddish Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird, and Green Hermit. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire are possible during certain seasons.

Afterward, we will begin our ascent through the Alto Mayo Valley. Along the way, we will stop at several elevations to photograph hummingbirds and other cloud forest specialties before arriving at Owlet Lodge.

Day 6

  Owlet Lodge  Full day

Owlet Lodge is one of the premier birding and hummingbird photography destinations in northern Peru. The feeders near the dining room provide outstanding photographic opportunities throughout the day.

At this elevation, in the upper cloud forest, we may encounter species such as Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Bronzy Inca, Collared Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Brown Violetear, and Long-tailed Sylph.

We may also visit Huembo Reserve, located about one hour away, to photograph the spectacular endemic Marvelous Spatuletail, one of Peru’s most iconic hummingbirds, along with several other regional specialties.

Day 7

Owlet Lodge to Tarapoto.

This morning we will spend additional time birding between Owlet Lodge and Huembo if needed, targeting species that may have been missed previously. We will then descend toward Tarapoto, making several birding stops along the way.

Day 8

Tarapoto to Bella Vista toward Flor de CAFÉ – Scarlet Banded  Barbet.

After breakfast, we will drive approximately two hours on a paved road to Bella Vista, an agricultural region surrounded by rice fields. From there, we continue along a rough mountain road through coffee and corn plantations managed by local farmers.

Several birding stops will be made en route before arriving at the family-run lodge in Flor de Café, home of the famous Scarlet-banded Barbet.

After lunch, we will begin searching for our main target species, as well as Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater, Cerulean-capped Manakin, and many other cloud forest birds. The area combines pristine cloud forest with traditional coffee plantations, creating excellent habitat for a wide variety of species.

After dinner, there is an optional opportunity to search for nocturnal birds, including Vermiculated Screech-Owl.

DAY 9 

Flor de Café Full Day.

Today we will spend a full day exploring the trails around Flor de Café and the Cordillera Azul Antbird area.

Our primary targets include Scarlet-banded Barbet, Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater, Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Foothill Schiffornis, Short-tailed Antthrush, Jet Manakin, and Blue-rumped Manakin. The area is also known for its impressive diversity of colorful tanagers and mixed-species flocks.

In the afternoon, we will focus on finding the recently described Cordillera Azul Antbird. Our local guide will take us to known territories where this highly localized species can often be observed.

Flor de Café to Tarapoto city- Lima.

This morning we will have a final opportunity to search for Scarlet-banded Barbet and other specialties around Flor de Café. Afterward, we will begin our return journey to Tarapoto, making birding stops at different habitats along the way before connecting with our flight to Lima.

Lima – Tarapoto

After a 50-minute flight from Lima to Tarapoto, we will arrive in this vibrant city located at the foothills of the Andes (350 m / 1,148 ft). Upon arrival, we will visit two excellent hummingbird photography sites where we can expect to find species such as Gould’s Jewelfront, White-bearded Hermit, Pale-tailed Barbthroat, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Golden-tailed Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin, Koepcke’s Hermit, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Long-billed Starthroat, Amethyst Woodstar, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Blue-tailed Emerald, and Sparkling Violetear. Black-bellied Thorntail is also possible during certain seasons.

Day 2

Tarapoto – Waqanki lodge

Before departing for Waqanki Lodge, we will spend part of the morning at the hummingbird feeders, taking advantage of different light conditions and additional photographic opportunities.

Afterward, we will drive approximately three hours to Waqanki Lodge, one of the most famous bird photography destinations in northern Peru.

Day 3

Waqanki Lodge is located at approximately 860 m (2,820 ft) and offers excellent opportunities for hummingbird photography. One of the main targets here is the spectacular Rufous-crested Coquette.

Day 4

Wakanky – Arena Blanca lodge

Today we travel to Arena Blanca Lodge, located in the foothills of the Alto Mayo Valley.

The lodge attracts an excellent variety of hummingbirds including Wire-crested Thorntail, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, and Violet-headed Hummingbird. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire may also be present depending on the season.

The lodge also maintains a hide for Rufous-breasted Wood Quail, Little Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, and Orange-billed Sparrow. Additional hides are currently being developed for Black-bellied Tanager and other foothill specialties.

Owlet Lodge is one of the premier hummingbird photography destinations in northern Peru. Several feeding stations around the lodge provide excellent photographic opportunities throughout the day, particularly those located near the dining room.

At this elevation, in the upper cloud forest, we may encounter species such as Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Bronzy Inca, Collared Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Brown Violetear, and Long-tailed Sylph.

Today we will visit the nearby Alto Nieva Reserve, one of the best locations for photographing high-elevation hummingbirds and cloud forest specialties.

Target species include Royal Sunangel, Greenish Puffleg, Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Long-tailed Sylph, Bronzy Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Peruvian Racket-tail, Rufous-vented Whitetip, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, and Many-spotted Hummingbird.

Later we will visit Llantería, another excellent hummingbird location. Here we will search for Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Sabrewing (seasonal), Green Hermit, Gray-chinned Hermit, White-tipped Sicklebill, and Violet-fronted Brilliant.

Owlet Lodge to Huembo Lodge

Today we travel to the Huembo Interpretation Center, one of the few locations where the spectacular endemic Marvelous Spatuletail can be photographed reliably.

The reserve offers excellent photographic opportunities and serves as one of Peru’s most important hummingbird conservation projects.

Our main target today is the extraordinary Marvelous Spatuletail, one of the world’s most remarkable hummingbirds. However, several additional species regularly visit the feeders and surrounding habitats.

Possible species include Sparkling Violetear, Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Bronzy Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Hummingbird, Little Woodstar, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Purple-throated Sunangel, Andean Emerald, Rufous-capped Thornbill, White-bellied Woodstar, and Brown Violetear.

Day 10

Huembo Town to Jaen town and Lima

After breakfast, we will transfer to Jaén Airport for our flight back to Lima. Depending on schedules and available time, we may make a few final birding stops before concluding the tour.

LIMA- CUSCO CITY- SACRED VALLEY- OLLANTAYTAMBO TOWN

Upon arrival at Cusco Airport, we will transfer to the Sacred Valley, a journey of approximately two hours. Our hotel is located in Ollantaytambo and offers excellent opportunities to photograph the endemic Bearded Mountaineer directly in the gardens.

The hotel is also conveniently located near Ensifera Camp, also known as the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds, one of the best hummingbird photography locations in the Cusco region.

DAY 2 

SANTUARY OF HUMMINGBIRDS FULL DAY

Today we will spend the entire day at the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds, located approximately 35 minutes from the hotel.

Species regularly seen include Giant Hummingbird, Green-and-white Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Tyrian Metaltail, Sparkling Violetear, Shining Sunbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird, White-tufted Sunbeam (seasonal), White-bellied Woodstar, and several additional hummingbird species.

The sanctuary features beautiful gardens and natural perches, providing excellent photographic opportunities throughout the day.

DAY 3.

OLLANTAYTAMBO- WAYQUECHA BIOLOGICAL STATION

After breakfast, we will have another opportunity to photograph birds in the hotel gardens or revisit the Sanctuary of Hummingbirds before departing for Wayquecha Biological Station.

The drive takes us through the town of Paucartambo and into the famous Manu Road. Upon arrival at Wayquecha, we will photograph hummingbirds visiting the feeders, including Gould’s Inca, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Tyrian Metaltail, Shining Sunbeam, Violet-throated Starfrontlet, and Long-tailed Sylph.

Additional feeders attract species such as Hooded Mountain Tanager, Black-faced Brushfinch, and Blue-capped Tanager.

A small bathing area near the station attracts many colorful species, including Golden-collared Tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Moustached Flowerpiercer, Masked Flowerpiercer, Blue-capped Tanager, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, and Rust-and-yellow Tanager.

After breakfast we descend toward Cock of the Rock Lodge. Along the way we will visit one of the newest feeder locations on the Manu Road.

Species regularly visiting the feeders include Versicolored Barbet, Spotted Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Yellow-bellied Tanager, Golden-naped Tanager, Blue-gray Tanager, Silver-beaked Tanager, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Palm Tanager, and many others.

Later in the day we will visit an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek, where we hope to photograph the spectacular southern Peruvian subspecies.

After breakfast we continue descending to Villa Carmen Biological Station, located at the foothills of the Andes.

The feeders here attract species such as Blue-throated Piping-Guan, Spix’s Guan, Purplish Jay, Violaceous Jay, Red-capped Cardinal, and Russet-backed Oropendola. Hoatzins are also frequently encountered and can often be photographed at close range.

The hummingbird feeders provide opportunities to photograph several lowland and foothill species.

Today we will visit Pico de Hoz, located approximately 20 minutes from the lodge.

Specialized feeding stations offer opportunities to photograph Amazonian Antpitta, Rufous-sided Crake, Black-capped Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, Little Tinamou, and Pectoral Sparrow.

Hummingbird species include White-browed Hermit, White-bearded Hermit, Pale-tailed Barbthroat, and several additional foothill species.

Today we explore another productive foothill location where mixed flocks are common.

Notable hummingbird species include Buff-tailed Sicklebill, Rufous-crested Coquette, Blue-fronted Lancebill, and Koepcke’s Hermit.

Day 1: Cusco to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge

Our overland journey begins at 3,400m (11,150 ft) with an early departure from the highland city of Cusco. Today’s destination is the lush cloud forest region where the Andes meet the Amazon basin. Our first stop is Huacarpay, a mountain wetland habitat, with numerous bird species such as the endemic Bearded Mountaineer, Rusty-fronted Canastero as well as non-endemic flycatchers, coots, teals, egrets, hummingbirds, raptors, and seedeaters. Between the Cusco Valley and the Paucartambo valley we’ll stop to look for two more endemic birds, the colorful Chesnut- breasted Mountain Finch and the Creamy-crested Spinetail. We will reach a maximum altitude of 3,900m (12,790ft) before we start down through forested cliffs, waterfalls and gorges. Some of the stops along the way include mountain villages, a hilltop necropolis with chullpas (pre-Inca burial chambers), and numerous opportunities to spot ground tyrants and miners. The ridge top of Ajanaco marks our final high point in the Andes. On a clear day, we’ll see a breathtaking panorama of cloud forest and mountains giving way to the lowland Amazonian rainforest far below us.

After a picnic lunch we descend through the rapidly changing habitat characteristic of the tropical Andes. We move through grassland, stunted trees and elfin forest with mixed-species flocks of mountain tanagers, metaltails, tyrannulets, flower piercers and tapaculos. Next is the cloud forest with giant ferns, monster begonias, countless orchids and bromeliads. There’s a good chance we’ll see the Inca Flycatcher (endemic) and more mixed-species flocks of tanagers, fruiteaters, quetzals, the Solitary and Black-and-Chesnut eagles.

As dusk arrives on Manu Road we may see one of the most rare and unique birds in the world – the Lyre-tailed Nightjar.

After an early morning bird walk and breakfast we’ll drive to El Mirador (Union Lookout) to look for mixed-species flocks of Blue-necked Tanagers, Paradise Tanagers, Bush Tanagers, Slaty-capped Flycatchers, Slate-throated red stars, Olive-backed and Mountain woodcreepers, Mountain Foliage Gleaners, Blue-banded and Chesnut-tipped toucanets, Crimson-bellied and Golden Olive woodpeckers, and Highland Motmots. El Mirador is a great place to spot raptors as well.

Back to the lodge for lunch and time to enjoy the garden, home to at least six species of hummingbirds, the Booted Racket-tail, and Wire-crested Thorntail.

We’ll set aside some time to visit a lek in the cloud forest to observe the Cock-of-the-Rock, the national bird of Peru. We’ll get a chance to watch the colorful males dance to attract the females.

Day 3: Cock-of-The-Rock – Cusco city

After breakfast, we’ll be back to the Manu road (Asfalt road), we continue our bird watching. The landscape will change as we climb and move through the cloud and elfin forests. We’ll have a good chance to see Mountain Tanagers, Chat Tyrants, and Elaenias. We’ll have a box lunch along the way as we move through the magical landscape toward Cusco. The trip ends when we drop you back at your hotel in Cusco.

Day 1 Lima – Tarapoto

This morning we fly from the Peruvian coast to the northern Amazonian foothills. After a flight of approximately 50 minutes, we arrive in Tarapoto (350 m / 1,148 ft).

Upon arrival, we will visit two excellent hummingbird photography locations. Species regularly seen include Gould’s Jewelfront, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Golden-tailed Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin, Koepcke’s Hermit, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Long-billed Starthroat, Amethyst Woodstar, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Blue-tailed Emerald, and Sparkling Violetear. Black-bellied Thorntail is also possible during certain seasons.

After an early breakfast, we will spend the morning at the hummingbird feeders around Tarapoto, taking advantage of the favorable morning light for photography.

Waqanki Lodge is one of the best-known birding and photography locations along the Northern Birding Route, situated at approximately 860 m (2,820 ft).

One of the main targets here is the spectacular Rufous-crested Coquette. Other hummingbirds regularly visiting the feeders include White-necked Jacobin, Brown Violetear, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Great-billed Hermit, Black-throated Mango, Long-billed Starthroat, Blue-tailed Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, White-chinned Sapphire, Black-throated Hermit, Amethyst Woodstar, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, and Black-eared Fairy.

We depart early and travel to Aguas Verdes, approximately one hour from Waqanki. This area, also known as the Arena Blanca Reserve, offers excellent hummingbird photography opportunities.

Species include Wire-crested Thorntail, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Brown Violetear, Blue-tailed Emerald, Rufous-crested Coquette, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Green-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Reddish Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird, and Green Hermit. Black-throated Brilliant and Rufous-throated Sapphire are possible during certain seasons.

Afterward, we continue ascending through the Alto Mayo Valley, stopping at several elevations for bird photography before arriving at Owlet Lodge.

Later we will visit Llantería, another productive hummingbird site where we may find Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Sabrewing (seasonal), Green Hermit, Gray-chinned Hermit, White-tipped Sicklebill, and Violet-fronted Brilliant.

Today we drive toward the village of Pomacochas, enjoying spectacular mountain scenery, agricultural landscapes, and remnant cloud forest along the way.

Our destination is Huembo Reserve, where we will focus on photographing one of Peru’s most extraordinary endemic hummingbirds, the Marvelous Spatuletail.

Day 3: Cock-of-The-Rock – Manu Biological Station

We’ll have another chance to visit the Cock-of-the-Rock lek before we continue our journey in the cloud forest – through trees, waterfalls, and dramatic ravines – to the Andean foothills and bamboo forest. Here we’ll look for species like the Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner, Red-billed Scythebill, Chesnut-backed Antstrike, Foothill Antwren, White-backed Fire-eye, Yellow- breasted Flycatcher, Stripe-chested Antwren, and Cabanis Spinetail. We’ll also see the Golden-bellied Warbler, Ornate Flycatcher, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, rare Peruvian Pietail (Endemic Hummingbird), and Fine-barred Piculet (endemic). In Pillcopata we’ll stop to visit a coca plantation and learn about this plant and its many medicinal uses. Then we drive to the Manu Biological Station a couple of kilometers from Pilcopata town so there are trails and garden to explore the rest of the day

We’ll spend two days at Manu Biological Station run by Amazon Conservation (Nonprofit Organization) They converted various plantations and citrus, Pineaple, Manioc from the previous owner to experimental agriculture areas and to study the flora and fauna for Biologist, this station boasts a bird list of near 500 species! The lodge is in the transitional zone (1640 feet of elevation) where the last foothills of the Andes begin to flatten out into the lowland Amazon Basin. Butterfly bushes attract numerous hummingbird species including the Rufous-crested Coquette, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Blue-tailed Emerald, Black-eared Fairy, Wire-crested Thorntail, Amethyst Woodstar and the endemic Kopeck’s Hermit.

We will also see birds in floodplain and hill forest habitats. Some of the species we will be looking for include the Black-capped Tinamou, the Strange Hoatzin, Buckley’s Forest Falcon, Wattled Guan, Military Macaw, Blue-headed Macaw, Pheasant Cuckoo, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Fine-barred Piculet, Red-billed Scythbill, Dark-breasted Spinetail, Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner, Bamboo Antshrike, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Amazonian and Thrush-like antpittas, Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Mottle-backed Elaenia, Red-billed Tyrannulet, Johanne’s Tody-tyrant, Yellow-browed Tody-flycatcher, Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Ornate Flycatcher, Band-tailed, Fiery-capped and Round-tailed manakins, Golden-bellied (Cusco) Warbler, Black-faced Dacnis and many more. We will go owling for the Mottled Owl, Black-banded Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl along with Great, Long-tailed and Common Potoos.

We continue  in the afternoon to Atalaya’s Mirador from where we see the upper Madre de Dios River  on the way we stop at the local initiative for birds like Hummingbirds at the feeding station (sugary water) so we will be combining the birding in the gardens and sunset time over the Piñi Piñi Mountain range a magical. The upper Madre de Dios river, one of the southernmost tributaries of the Amazon River.

We’ll have a good chance to see Mountain Tanagers, Chat Tyrants, and elaenias. We’ll have a box lunch along the way as we move through the magical landscape toward Cusco. The trip ends when we drop you back at your hotel in Cusco.

Day 1. 

Flight  Lima – Puerto maldonado (Tambopata National Reserve)

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we transfer to the Tambopata River port and travel by boat along the Tambopata River, one of the major tributaries of the Madre de Dios River.

After reaching the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint, we hike approximately 3 km through pristine rainforest to Lake Sandoval and continue by canoe to our lodge.

During the afternoon we will explore the lake looking for Giant River Otter, Red Howler Monkey, Brown Capuchin Monkey, Bolivian Squirrel Monkey, Hoatzin, Agami Heron, Ringed Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Red-bellied Macaw, and many other rainforest species.

 Day 2   

Lago Sandoval.

After breakfast, we explore Lake Sandoval by canoe in search of the resident Giant River Otter family and the rich wildlife that inhabits the reserve.

The lake and surrounding forest support several monkey species, numerous waterbirds, and excellent photographic opportunities.

During the afternoon we will position ourselves to photograph Red-bellied Macaws returning to their favorite Mauritia palm stands.

After dinner, we will enjoy a night walk looking for nocturnal wildlife including Black Caiman, frogs, insects, and other rainforest creatures.

DAY 3

Sandoval lake Lodge to Puerto Maldonado to Collpas Tambopata Inn

After returning to Puerto Maldonado, we continue by road and boat toward the Tambopata Clay Lick area.

In the afternoon we will explore forest trails and canopy towers searching for species such as White-throated Toucan, Curl-crested Aracari, Scarlet Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, and many additional rainforest birds.

Day 4

Colpa Chuncho

Before sunrise we travel by boat to the famous Chuncho Clay Lick, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife photography experiences.

Here we expect to photograph Scarlet Macaw, Red-and-green Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Mealy Parrot, Yellow-crowned Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Orange-cheeked Parrot, White-eyed Parakeet, and many other species.

Later we will explore the riverbanks searching for Jaguars, Capybaras, and additional wildlife.

Day 5

Collpas Tambopata Inn to Puerto Maldonado –  Flight Cuzco – Ollantaytambo

After a final morning opportunity for photography, we fly to Cusco and continue by road to the Sacred Valley.

The hotel gardens provide opportunities to photograph Bearded Mountaineer, Giant Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, and other Andean species.

Valle Sacrado – Ensifera camp

Today we visit Ensifera Camp, one of the finest hummingbird photography locations in the Cusco region.

Target species include Giant Hummingbird, Shining Sunbeam, Tyrian Metaltail, Sparkling Violetear, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch, and Blue-and-yellow Tanager.

The afternoon will be spent around the hotel gardens.

Day 7

 Ollantaymbo – Macchu picchu + Jardin botanico (Mariposario)

This morning we take the train to Machu Picchu.

Before visiting the Inca citadel, we will spend time at the botanical gardens and butterfly center, where excellent bird photography opportunities include Saffron-crowned Tanager, Golden Tanager, Silver-beaked Tanager, Thick-billed Euphonia, Dusky-green Oropendola, Torrent Duck, and Andean Motmot.

During the afternoon we enjoy a guided visit to Machu Picchu.

Flight Lima to  Tarapoto then Aconabith (Centro de Picalfores)

Early morning flight to Tarapoto.

Upon arrival we visit hummingbird gardens around the city, photographing Gould’s Jewelfront, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, White-necked Jacobin, and many others.

Tarapoto to Waqanki Lodge

Morning birding at Ricuricocha searching for Comb Duck, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Hoatzin, and Wattled Jacana.

We then continue to Waqanki Lodge where we photograph Rufous-crested Coquette, White-necked Jacobin, Black-throated Mango, Black-throated Hermit, Paradise Tanager, Black-bellied Tanager, and Gartered Trogon.

Morning visit to Aguas Verdes and Llantería.

Species include Wire-crested Thorntail, Rufous-crested Coquette, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Paradise Tanager, Booted Racket-tail, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Ecuadorian Piedtail, Green Hermit, and Violet-fronted Brilliant.
